Styling a king bed right means making a space that feels cozy, warm, and relaxing. I mean, it is your bedroom after all, it should be all of those things and more!
I used to walk into my primary bedroom and would really lack all of those feelings. It was a place where I slept for 8 hours straight, if I was lucky, and then left again until it was time to repeat. That’s when I realized how styling a king bed was SO important, and let me say… as soon as I did, I immediately felt all of those feelings of comfort.
Today I’m going to cover exactly how to style your king bed, so you too can experience the coziness you absolutely deserve!
A lot of people think that styling a bed is only about the pillows, but it’s also about the layers (comforter, quilt, and throw blankets), and colors.
Warning: after using the techniques in this post, you’ll feel totally spoiled and will never want to sleep in any other bed except your own. You have been warned. 😉
How to Style a King Bed
1. Pillows
Pillows will be the accent color of your king bed, so this is where you’ll want to pick a color scheme. In order to style your king bed like a designer, we’ll be working with a white/neutral comforter. With white as our backdrop, this will give you ample room to pick and play with your desired color scheme (next section).
No matter what color you end up going with, make sure the color scheme compliments the rest of the room, and all of your pillows stay within it!
How to arrange pillows on king bed
Always smallest in the front, and biggest in the back.
We’ll assume the standard king bed width is 76”. For a modern king bed pillow arrangement, the best way to style pillows to make your king bed look full and luxurious is (in order from back to front):
- Sleeping Pillows and Shams stacked on top of each other
- 3 Euro Square Pillows (23” to 26”)
- 2 Square Pillows (20”)
- 1 Long Lumbar Pillow
This is my preferred way of styling a king-size bed but there are other variations you can do as well!
For example, changing out the long lumbar pillow for one small pillow in front.
Sleeping Pillows and Shams
You’ll want to stack your sleeping pillows and your shams on top of one another in the back row. This will create a nice foundation for your euro pillows to lean against.
Btw, if you’re looking for literally the most comfortable pillow you’ll ever sleep on, you NEED the Coop Pillow in your life. It’s a cozy bed essential!
Euro Pillows (23” to 26”)
For the next row, you’ll want 3 euro pillows. Whether they’re all 23”, 26”, or anywhere in between, they will fill the width of your bed, which will help make it look grand. If you pick smaller pillows, then they won’t reach from end to end, and they’ll end up getting lost on the large king bed.
This is especially true if you have a large headboard. The height and width of a euro pillow will be proportionate to the big bed you’re putting them on.
Square Pillows (20”)
In front of the euro pillows, you’ll want 2 square 20” pillows. This will have your pillows beautifully cascading between rows, as your euro pillows will peek over your 20” square pillows.

Keep things interesting by going with another texture or different color within your color scheme for this row. This will add variety to your bed.
Long Lumbar Pillow
A really nice touch to pull everything together!
It may take a little bit of searching to get the perfect lumbar pillow for your bed, but it’s totally worth it. I bought mine at HomeGoods, so I recommend regularly checking there to see what comes in! Lumbar pillows really pull the entire bed together and make it look uniform.

If you don’t want to go the lumbar pillow route, a smaller square or rectangle pillow would be a good alternative. Think of it as the cherry on top!
2. Colors
Think about the first time you enter a nice hotel room and see that big, comfy-looking hotel bed, what do you notice? It’s white (and fluffy)!
White is a color that will make your king bed feel luxurious, big, and as comfortable as a cloud. Your comforter is the first glimpse at the comfiness yet to come, so that’s why you ideally want a white comforter.
If white isn’t your style, stick with a solid neutral, lighter color to act as your base.
When you opt for darker colors for your comforter, such as dark blues, browns, and grays, it can weigh down the room. A room that feels heavy is a room that you won’t feel completely relaxed in.
On the flip side, too much white can be…well, too much. Between the quilt, pillows, and throw blankets, there should be a great mix of accent colors to offset the white!

3. Sheets
Moving onto the next layer of our king bed are the sheets!
For your sheets, I recommend going with a white sheet set that is extremely soft to the touch. Yes, I did say white sheets. I know I said too much white is too much, but think of the comforter and sheets as the top and bottom of a sandwich.
We’re going to put all of the good stuff in between (and on top)! Plus, once you’ve made your bed, you’re not really going to see the sheets. So a white comforter and white sheets will flow seamlessly with each other.
Sheets are just as important as the comforter, not just for looks, but because they’re the layer touching your body. With this in mind, you should get exactly what you want.
You don’t have to pay a premium price for nice sheets but don’t skip out on nice sheets. You’ll thank yourself later for setting your sleepy self up for the best nights of sleep to come.
Also, be on the lookout at stores like HomeGoods. You can find some of the softest sheets there!
4. Quilt
Now is when you want to come back to the splash of color you want to add to your bed.
I recommend going with neutrals to keep the room feeling light and airy, and your bed looking luxurious. When thinking about the quilt, also think about the pillows we talked about earlier. You can stick with your pillow color scheme, or go with another complementary color that works well with your pillow color scheme.
For example, I had a vision of a copper color scheme for my king bed. I had just painted an accent wall behind the bed a nice copper color, and I wanted it to flow onto the bed.
So for my quilt, I went with a neutral taupe/sand color from the Casaluna brand at Target. And for the pillows, I went with taupe, copper, and faux leather. I added two Casaluna quilts below that are very similar to the one that we have. Unfortunately, ours is no longer made!
You could do taupes, light grays, blues… it’s really up to you! Since these are accents to the cloud white bed, it’s okay to add your flare of colors here. Don’t be afraid to play with color! Stick with a color scheme, and utilize different shades of that color to add depth and dimension to your bed.
How it looks when you make the bed:
Cover your sheets and bed completely with the quilt. No need to fold it down as we will expose the entire quilt once we fold down the comforter.
5. Comforter
Now for the top layer, the comforter!
To style your king bed for a luxurious, expensive, and hotel kind of look, you’ll want to stick with a white comforter as mentioned before. Or a neutral, solid color comforter. This top layer, along with the pillows, is going to be what you notice immediately each time you walk into the room. The comforter is a very important piece to get right because you see so much of it.
And since we are using color with the pillows, quilt, and throw blankets, you don’t want these colors to clash with the comforter. That’s another reason why white is the go-to for styling a king bed.

How it looks when you make the bed:
Fold your comforter halfway down your bed. This will create the illusion that your comforter is thicker than it is, adding the ultimate comfy-looking element to your bed.
6. Throw Blanket
So imagine your bed is completely made with a white comforter and accented pillows. Looks pretty good right? Well, there is one more element you can add to really make it look magazine-worthy: a throw blanket.
A single-throw blanket can be laid across the bottom of your comforter, or diagonally at the end of either side of the bed. Use your color scheme to decide on a throw blanket.
Throw blankets can be for function, or solely for looks. Mine is actually used during the night, so it’s also functional – and if you know me I like 10 blankets at night so I’ll take everything in the room, please!

How it looks when you make the bed:
If you’re using an actual functional blanket, fold it longways, that way it can drape across the entire foot of your bed. Place it on top of your folded comforter. If you just have a chunky knitted throw or an even simpler throw, you can “throw” it over one of the bottom corners of your bed, diagonally.
This will look like a pro styled your king bed – but let’s be honest, you are the pro!
