Best ways to hide cords

So you just mounted your TV at the perfect height on the wall. Or maybe you’re about to.

Wires cascading like a waterfall from underneath your TV is NOT the look you want. Luckily for you, there are some simple ideas, and kits, out there to hide your TV wires.

A fresh, clean-looking wall-mounted TV is going to drastically enhance the look and feel of your room. It’ll make things feel a little less chaotic and a lot more purposeful.

In our home, we’ve wall-mounted four TVs in total, with my favorite being our gallery wall with TV. And we’ve used almost all of these techniques.

Here are 5 sneaky ways to hide the wires from your wall-mounted TV!

Important: Before You Begin

  • If you think you can simply run your power cables from your TV behind your drywall – DON’T! This is against code and creates a fire hazard. Stick with one of the below options.
  • Think there’s an HVAC vent in the wall behind your TV? This happened to me. Option 1 is going to be your best bet since it’s non-invasive and you’re not cutting into the wall. But this is something you’ll need to figure out before drilling any holes in your wall!

1. Paintable Cable Raceway

Difficulty: EASY

This is the easiest solution of them all when it comes to ways to hide your TV cords.

Run tv cables through wall

A paintable cable raceway is pretty much how it sounds – it’s a paintable track that neatly encloses all of those cables you need to go from point A to point B.

I’ve used this twice in my home – one of them being for my gallery wall TV.

How it works

This particular product is peel-and-stick so it’s an extremely simple install. It comes with several straight pieces and several corner pieces so no matter your TV layout, you have everything you need to hide those TV cords.

OH and did I mention it’s paintable? That’s where the true beauty of this product shines through! Or should I say blends in…😉

How to remove paint from laminate floor

Once you get all of your necessary cables tucked into the raceway, it snaps shut. Then simply paint the raceway the same color as your wall. So it’s essentially hiding the thing that’s hiding your cables for your TV – double the sneakiness!

How many cables can this track hold? For reference, in the raceway below, I have two power cables and one HDMI cable. I may be able to squeeze in one or two more cords if I need to.

Tips for hiding your TV cable raceway

Install the raceway closer to one of the sides of your TV instead of the dead center. Why? Because it moves the raceway out of the focal point and will become even more inconspicuous.

To make this one of the most creative ways to hide TV cords on the wall, break out your design eye.

Utilize decor, such as vases, stacked books, or picture frames to sit on top of your media console, and in front of your cable raceway. So now you’re hiding the thing, that’s hiding the thing, that’s hiding your cables…TRIPLE the sneakiness! 😂

If you’re wondering how to hide wires from your mounted TV without cutting the wall, this is probably your best answer! This is also the perfect solution if you have an air duct in the wall directly behind your TV.

2. In-Wall Cable Management Kit

Difficulty: EASY/MEDIUM

If you want your cables to not be seen whatsoever, this DIY-friendly option is for you.

ECHOGEAR in-Wall Cable Management Kit - Includes Power & Low Voltage Cable Management - Hide TV Wires When Mounting A TV - Includes Hole Saw Drill Attachment for Easy Install

Echogear made a pure genius product when it comes time to hide wires from your wall-mounted TV. And it will completely get your cables out of your sight. As long as you have a drill and screwdriver, that’s all you need!

If you’re looking for a simple kit to hide TV wires in your wall, look no further.

How it works

You’ll first install one end hidden behind your TV. Then the ETL-certified cable goes behind your wall, connecting to the other end you’ll install further down your wall.

The second end plugs into an actual outlet. And voila! Mounted TV cable management achieved.

There’s a slot for 4 braided HDMI cables to sneak through. HDMI cables are perfectly fine to go behind your drywall as is. They are considered low-voltage and don’t bring the same safety concerns your TV power cable does. The same goes for Ethernet, aux, and coaxial cables.

It comes with a hole saw, which is exactly how it sounds. It’s a round saw, which attaches to your drill, that cuts a perfectly round hole in your drywall for both ends.

Need two outlets? Maybe you have a wall-mounted soundbar directly underneath your TV. They have it! You’ll just need a drywall saw and screwdriver.

These are the DIY-friendly versions of hiring an actual electrician to install actual outlets. It’s just a lot easier and a lot cheaper!

Plus, if you ever rearrange your room, it can be easily removed and patched up like it was never there!

This is one of the best ways to hide cords.

3. Create a New Outlet Behind Your TV

Difficulty: Medium/Hard (could require an electrician)

Consider this a more permanent solution to hide wires from your mounted TV. If you are comfortable changing outlets and switches – you may be able to tackle this solution with confidence.

Important: If you are set on going with this option but don’t feel comfortable, it’s always best to get the pros involved. This will be a simple job for an electrician and shouldn’t cost that much money! I am not an electrician, so I cannot provide advice here.

In the end, you’re getting the same exact look and feel that you’d get in idea number 2 – this option just gives you a real outlet. It does not solve for hiding HDMI cables, however, so we’ll talk about that in the next cable management idea.

How it works

The new outlet is typically bounced off an outlet below the TV or some other nearby outlet.

While this outlet could eventually be removed later down the road if needed, this is the most permanent solution when it comes to hiding TV cables in a wall.

Two of our wall-mounted TVs utilize this cable management idea. It does look really clean and keeps the TV and soundbar cables out of the way.

But since I hide my cable raceway so well under my living room TV, there’s not much difference to me in terms of look and feel.

This will be the end-all-be-all when you need to hide wires from your wall-mounted TV.

4. Low Voltage Cable Management (HDMI, Ethernet, Coaxial)

If all you need is some cable management for your HDMI, Ethernet, coaxial, or aux cords, this idea is for you!

As mentioned earlier, all of these cables are low voltage meaning that they can go behind your wall. So this is the best solution for how to hide those kinds of TV wires in your wall!

You’ll need:

  • Drill

Important: This idea is only for low-voltage cables listed above. You cannot feed your TV or soundbar power cables through this. Again, always consult an electrian if you have any questions.

How it works

You’ll install one end behind your TV, and one end lower on the wall (typically behind a TV stand).

Simply feed those low-voltage cables through and connect them to their appropriate device. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

This is a great solution for running low-voltage cables through the wall!

5. TV Cable Clips

While this idea doesn’t necessarily hide your cables, it can make them a little less noticeable.

Cable clips are going to work best in a scenario where you may have a small gap where TV cables are visible.

For our TV in the basement, there is about a 1”-2” gap between our center speaker and the bottom of the TV. It was too small of a gap to take the effort of hiding the cables in the wall. So I used cable clips to bundle two cables together!

Instead of your cables going every which way, this is a great alternative to wall-mounted TV cable management when drastic measures aren’t needed.

Cable clips can also come in handy for helping route your TV cables up, over, or around – whichever way you need to guide them to hide cables from your wall-mounted TV.

Last but not least, you can’t go wrong with a classic power strip if that works better in your space.

Don’t Forget…

When you’re choosing to hide your cables from your wall-mounted TV behind the wall, a good stud finder is always helpful to have on hand.

The last thing you want to do is cut a hole directly into a stud. That’s not going to be a fun patch job!

I SWEAR by this stud finder. I have used it for every single DIY project that I’ve completed. And that’s a lot lol. I love the visual aspect so you know where the edges of the stud are. It has a bunch of other cool bells and whistles.

But if you don’t have a stud finder (or a good one – I’ve been there and done that), I highly recommend this one!
