Very few things in life rival the smell of fresh laundry. I mean, right when you get your laundry out of the dryer… The warm, freshly scented aroma that takes over the room. It’s hard to resist!
But how do you keep your laundry smelling good after the dryer? Wouldn’t it be nice to have that scent follow you around for a few days? Well, I’m here to tell you the good news, it’s 100% possible to have good-smelling laundry, no, GREAT-smelling laundry.
How to make laundry smell good is simple; all it takes is the right products. Lucky for you, this post includes 6 products that you MUST try! They will have your laundry smelling unbelievably AMAZING. You’ll become obsessed with doing laundry!
6 Products That Will Make Your Laundry Smell Heavenly
I had always believed that fabric softener was the only way to get my laundry to smell good. Until one day, I accidentally used fabric softener, out of habit, on a very expensive sheet set. Long story short, the fabric softener caused a good-sized hole in my sheet and it was no longer usable. 😔
I made a vow to never use fabric softener again out of frustration lol. If you do just a tiny bit of research, you’ll quickly find fabric softener is not good for your clothes, sheets, or towels.
There are SO many different ways to achieve good-smelling laundry without fabric softener, and all of these ideas prove that!
Just remember, good-smelling laundry can be trial and error. It’s not a one-size-fits-all type of thing as everyone has different preferences. But I’m hoping this narrowed-down list will make your search that much easier!
1. Downy Infusions Scent Booster Beads (Lavender and Vanilla Bean)
I cannot let you go through life without getting to experience the scent of this product. It is SO good, there are not enough words to describe how perfect, cozy, or incredible it smells. Just pour some beads into the bottom of your washer before you put your clothes in – and it’s as simple as that!
It’s honestly hard for me to stop smelling my shirt throughout the day after using these scent booster beads to make my laundry smell good. This will make your blankets smell so unbelievably good, your guests will be trying to steal them LOL.
In my opinion, hands down the best product to make your laundry smell good! 🙂

2. Downy Infusions Dryer Sheets (Lavender and Vanilla Bean)
Well, since we are talking about the secret to great-smelling laundry, you’re going to need a great-smelling dryer sheet to top it all off. And what better way to do it than with the same exact scent as your booster beads?
Downy has got you covered – seriously they make it too easy to have good-smelling laundry.
Have you ever been sitting outside, minding your own business, when you get a blast of scents from your neighbor doing laundry? Well, now you’ll be making your neighbors wait outside for the next time you do your laundry!
3. Mrs. Meyers Laundry Detergent (Honeysuckle)
Mrs. Meyers is a household name, but you probably know the brand best for its handsoaps.
Let me tell you – if you’ve ever smelled the honeysuckle-scented hand soap and became obsessed (as if you had any other choice), well you’re in luck. You can get your laundry smelling exactly like that homey, floral scent in the hand soap.
If you’re worried about overpowering scents, and just want a dab of good-smelling laundry, this might be your new favorite item in your laundry room. Plus it’s a cleaner solution, as it’s a plant-derived detergent scented with essential oils. It’s made without parabens, phthalates, optical brighteners, or artificial colors.
So if you’re a little more sensitive to detergents and want to try a scented detergent, this is probably a safe one!
Mrs. Meyers also has dryer sheets to match its detergent, so be sure to snag those up as well if you go this route!
4. Gain flings Laundry Detergent Soap Pacs (Original Scent)
There are very few smells out there that are better than the classic smell of Gain. There’s no better way to describe the scent than as extremely fresh.
If you love laundry detergent pods but want something that packs an extremely fresh scent, it looks like you may have just found your new detergent!
Gain flings have 50% more scent than your typical Gain liquid detergent.
I mean, you know the scent is good when they make wall plug-ins, car fresheners, and even Febreeze with the Gain scent. Have a small space like a closet that you want to smell like Gain? They’ve thought about that too with these fresheners.
Don’t forget the Gain dryer sheets if you choose to give Gain a try.
5. Febreeze Unstoppables Touch Fabric Spray
Your laundry can also get its amazing scent without the washer and dryer.
How is this possible? With fabric sprays! Febreeze fabric sprays are a great item to have on hand, especially if you’re wondering how to make clothes smell good fast, or really any other fabric around your home. This includes blankets, couches, pillows, beds, etc. The versatility is probably one of my favorite things with this product.
I highly recommend trying these two scents: Fresh and Breeze. They will keep your laundry smelling SO good – it’ll be hard to tell a difference if your washer and dryer really had a hand in your amazing-smelling laundry or not.
6. Arm & Hammer Laundry Detergent Plus OxiClean (Fresh Burst)
Sometimes laundry can get really stained and really smelly. It can be hard to find a laundry detergent that actually removes those tough odors and stains, and makes your laundry smell good all at the same time.
If you are an active person who needs to get those odors out of your clothes or have kids in sports that cause a lot of staining – Arm & Hammer laundry detergent plus OxiClean (Fresh Burst) is for you!
OxiClean does a ridiculously good job at getting out stains, while the odor blasters will have your clothes smelling like the definition of fresh.
If you’re looking for a heavy-duty laundry detergent that can take on just about anything, this is a great product to make your clothes smell good!
Tips for How to Make Laundry Smell Good
- Stick with the same scent across your detergent, fabric softener, booster beads, dryer sheets, etc. If you have a different scent for each part of the laundry process, your scents will get lost within each other.
- Switch scents every once in a while. If you’ve been using the same scent for a while and are thinking “My clothes no longer smell good after washing”, chances are they do but you just got too used to the scent! You can become immune to a scent when you’re around it so much. Switch things up once you start to lose that good-smelling spark.
- Keep your washer and dryer clean. Be sure you’re cleaning the detergent trays, and cleaning the filter in your dryer. Odors can get trapped in these areas and dull your maximum scent potential.
- Leave a little space in between drying laundry. If your clothes, blankets, or towels are touching each other while they are drying, they can develop a musty, stinky smell. Leave at least 2-3 inches in between drying clothes.
- Stay away from fabric softeners. As mentioned earlier, these may be marketed with amazing-smelling scents for your laundry, but they are not good for the longevity of your clothes, towels, and other fabrics. You can get your clothes smelling like fabric softener, without using fabric softener!

My Personal Laundry Products I Obsess Over
1. Tide Free & Gentle Laundry Detergent (Unscented)
We have been using Tide Free & Gentle as our laundry detergent for a while now and I absolutely love it! I like that it is a more natural approach to doing laundry as it doesn’t have dyes or perfumes, and it’s hypoallergenic.
My husband has sensitive skin and after we switched to this, he hasn’t had any problems!
Plus I really like that it is unscented so that my booster beads and dryer sheets can really shine through without competing with any other scents.
2. Downy Infusions Scent Booster Beads (Lavender and Vanilla Bean)
This is my favorite way how to make laundry smell good! I’ve already talked a lot about it, but at the moment, I’ve been obsessed with the scent. Throwing a cup of these into the washer before I put my laundry in is so easy.
I might try other scents in the future, but for now, the Lavender and Vanilla Bean scent is living rent-free in my house! 😉
Like I said previously, I’ve had a couple of bad run-ins with fabric softener and used to rely on that to bring the scent to my clothes. Well after doing the research, I realized that it’s really not great for your laundry, and I was on the hunt for something that would bring the scent without harming my laundry.
Let me tell you, these booster beads make my laundry smell 5x better than fabric softener ever did, and my clothes, sheets, and towels aren’t paying for it!
3. Downy Infusions Dryer Sheets (Lavender and Vanilla Bean)
The cherry on top to my booster beads – dryer sheets that give my laundry an extra boost of my favorite scent. Once your laundry comes out, it will carry this scent for SO long.
Aside from clothes, I use the booster beads and dryer sheets with my blankets and I’ve gotten A TON of comments on how good they smell.
