9. The Classic
This may not be super out of the ordinary, however, I do think certain fonts can make house numbers feel unique. One way to change up the look of your home is to add modern house numbers! This can be achieved easily and be switched out in one weekend! These numbers are very similar to what we have on our house and I love them!
10. Gold Leaf House Numbers For Glass
This house number idea is specifically for that person out there who has a glass panel above their door. A unique solution for a unique door! After seeing this unique house number idea, I WISH I had glass above my front door!
11. Dragonfly House Numbers

What is the best size for house numbers?
4-5” tall
This seems to be the best size for house numbers especially if they are placed on the front of your home. However, every situation is different so it is good to remember some other important guidelines when selecting your house numbers. It’s important to keep in mind – visibility, durability, and contrast.
Visibility
Your house numbers need to be large enough so that you are able to see them on the street. It is extremely important that you are able to read your house numbers from your street because it could be a life-or-death situation. Paramedics or firefighters may need to get to your home fast and you don’t want your house numbers slowing them down.
4-5 inches seems to do the trick!
There could also be some situations where 4” is too small to see your house numbers adequately from the street and in that case you may want to select a slightly larger size. However, you don’t want them too large because they may look out of place. It’s important to keep in mind the right proportion.
In order to do this, walk to the street and take a look at your new house numbers. Ask yourself:
- Are they easily visible?
- Would you be able to see them if you were driving by in a car?
- Do they feel out of place or in a hard spot to see?
If anything is off about the placement, it might be a good idea to change the location or add house numbers to your mailbox instead.
Durability
These house numbers could be on your home for years so making sure you select durable numbers will be important. If you live in a state that gets all four seasons like me, you will want to get highly durable house numbers.
For me, that is the classic metal numbers with durable weather-resistant paint!
How do I make my house numbers stand out?
Contrast!
The biggest and easiest way to make your house numbers stand out is contrast. You could find the most unique number sign but if it blends into your home too much, it will become useless.
So try selecting numbers that will have high contrast.
For example, if your house is painted white, you may want to select darker (maybe black) number signs.
If your house is wood, maybe don’t add the adorable wood herringbone sign from above. Instead, select the classic or modern house numbers. It will still be just as adorable but now it will be appropriate for your home and have great contrast.
Should house numbers be vertical or horizontal?
Horizontal.
The general consensus is horizontal. This is because having your house numbers horizontal is easier for most people to read.
It also might be a good idea to check with your local government to see if they have rules or recommendations for house numbers in your area.
What side should your house number be on?
Whether your house number signs are placed on the left or right side of your door matters a little less. However, the more important thing to think about is if your house numbers are visible.
Your house numbers should always be visible from the street. If your house numbers are not visible from the street, you will need to place them on your mailbox.
You want to make it as easy for people to see your house number as possible!
How can I make my house number visible at night?
Put a little light on the subject! 😄 A good solution to having your numbers visible at night is to have a light on or around your numbers.
For our house, we leave the porch lights on and the way that the light bounces off our house, our numbers remain visible even at night.
If you do not have a porch light or a light post, you could add numbers that have some sort of solar-powered feature. These numbers from Amazon are great because they are solar-powered LED lights for the outside of your house. They are waterproof and have 3 lighting colors.
12. Solar Powered House Numbers
You could also place your numbers right below a porch light if it is visible from the street. Use this metal house number sign as an example.
13. Metal House Numbers Below Light
House numbers not only add character to your home, but they can really make a statement depending on how you use them. Not only that, but it helps all of those awesome delivery drivers get your packages to the right place, and emergency personnel when needed.
The unique house numbers in this post are sure to up your curb appeal!
