I’m beyond excited to share with you my organic modern bathroom reveal!
It took my husband and I a total of 2 months to completely break apart the old bathroom, and complete the stunning new bathroom to get to the big organic modern bathroom reveal. We were hoping to complete it sooner but caught covid halfway through the project.
The night before we tested positive, we were laying the floor until midnight which made for an extra sore day the following day 🙂
And if you’re wondering, we did this all ourselves! Hopefully, after reading this post, you feel inspired to complete your very own DIY bathroom remodel too!
In the end, we saved thousands of dollars between the demo, flooring, and installation of the lighting, plumbing, and vanity just by doing it all ourselves. I couldn’t be happier with the end result! It was much more stunning than I could have ever imagined!
Just a reminder that if you don’t feel comfortable with different aspects of completing a big DIY project, such as lighting and plumbing, it’s always best to contact a professional.
Getting the work done correctly without any risk to yourself or potential damage to your home is ABSOLUTELY worth the cost of labor. We personally have had a lot of experience along the way through other DIY projects we’ve completed and advice from family that works in these fields.
Alright, with all that being said let’s hop right into how we went from start to finish!
Inspiration for the organic modern bathroom reveal
A beautiful, light, and airy organic feel was always at the forefront of my mind every time I stepped foot into the old bathroom.
The old bathroom was very basic with its builder-grade fixtures, sinks, and vanity. There was zero “wow” factor in the bathroom.
The flooring was super thin vinyl. The porcelain vanity top had been damaged by previous homeowners. It was long overdue for an upgrade.
I wanted to stick with the light tones that came along with organic modern – the light wood, bright space, metal accents, and neutral wall colors.
There was one big thing I needed to figure out.
The bathroom is actually relatively small, so how do I create the illusion that this is a big space within the physical limits? Plus, this is technically a jack-and-jill bathroom, so I needed to keep the bathroom functional for this purpose.
The accent wall
Almost in no time, the wood accent wall for the bathroom was born!
A wooden accent wall in the bathroom was the solution to my small space issue.
This is because having a wooden accent wall behind the vanity would first draw your eye up.
Along with this, it would make the space feel taller than it is (I was working with 8-foot ceilings). Plus, the light organic look would create dimension, as opposed to just a painted wall like we had before.
However, I wanted something different. Something I hadn’t really seen before.
A herringbone pattern.
First of all, herringbone is such a beautiful pattern. Second of all, it has a continuous flowing look to it that I personally feel helps make the room feel even taller.
I chose to do a pine wood accent wall in the bathroom because pine has a natural beauty to it with different shades and patterns in the wood.
I mean, let’s just take a second to appreciate it!
The vanity
After deciding on the focal point of the organic modern bathroom reveal, it was time to decide on a vanity.
I wanted something that would become almost a continuation of the herringbone wood accent wall. The purpose was to avoid anything that would take away from the wall.
I needed something that was roughly the same color, something that was a part of the accent wall. The last thing I wanted was a vanity that felt disconnected from the overall vibe I was going for. It needed to be “one with the wall” haha.
That’s when I stumbled upon this wood vanity beauty.
The fluted look on the doors, the black hardware accents, and the white marble top were a match made in heaven. I knew this was exactly what would complete the space. It had all of the organic modern elements I was looking for.
The vanity is made from Mindi wood, and I must say it is gorgeous! I truly don’t know if there is a better match for the wooden accent wall out there!
The white marble top acted as the perfect separation between the accent wall and the wooden vanity.
This particular vanity has soft-close drawers and doors which was a big bonus. Upon receiving the wood vanity for our bathroom, I could immediately notice the massive difference in quality when compared to the builder-grade cabinets that were there before.
Something else that I LOVE about this vanity is that the legs lift it off the ground by several inches. I didn’t think about this at the time, but remember my issue with bathroom size?
Well, this further helps make the bathroom feel larger than it is. It seems like such a small thing but TRUST me. The old cabinets were closed off at the bottom, creating the feeling that there was no extra space. With the space now under the vanity, it just adds to the openness I was originally wanting for this bathroom!
The faucet
For the faucet, there were no doubts in my mind that black was the right choice.
Given the vanity top was white, the vanity itself and accent wall are wooden, and the vanity already had black hardware, black would be the perfect accent against the rest of it.
I immediately fell in love with the streamlined, modern design of this faucet. The rounded neck with the separate faucet handles looks so elegant to me, especially against the wood accent wall in the bathroom.
It’s modern but also has a very lightweight feel to it. Additionally, this particular faucet wasn’t big and bulky like a lot of others I had seen.
Of course, I’ve said it so many times, but light and airy was the only direction I wanted to go with this bathroom, and this faucet hit the nail on the head!
The lighting
I have always been a big fan of mixed metals in the bathroom. There’s so much opportunity to play with different metal colors, and it just adds to the excitement – it keeps things interesting!
Sure, the black hardware on the vanity and faucet looked stunning, but I can’t get enough of brass light fixtures.
And if you’re in question about brass, I’m here to tell you brass is back baby!
I have seen countless designs recently incorporating brass. Plus, my entire house has brass doorknobs on every door, and if you’ve ever replaced a doorknob, you know how expensive that can be!
So I incorporate brass where I can for a touch of elegance! Anyways, back to the lights. 🙂
As you can see on these light fixtures, they are clear glass and can be seen straight through to the other side. We just spent a ton of time on this accent wall, the last thing I want to do is cover it up!
Plus, having clear glass allows that much more light to radiate throughout the room – I won’t say it again, but light and airy. 😉
For comparison, the old bathroom had two light fixtures, both having 4 bulbs. The difference is that the old fixtures have fogged glass which dulls the light a bit and directs the light downwards.
I realized I could get the same amount of light with two bulbs on each fixture if they had clear glass. And for this space, I wanted to get away with blocking as little of the wood accent wall as I could without sacrificing too much light.
Two fixtures, two bulbs each was the answer!
The mirrors
To make this organic modern bathroom reveal really come to life, I knew the mirrors were going to be a key part of making this happen.
In the old bathroom, there was just one huge builder-grade mirror. This makes for a perfect home gym mirror (yes that’s where it went), but it covers up the entirety of the wall.
This sucker was a PAIN to pry off the wall while avoiding shattering, but we finally did it.
The new mirrors needed to be sleek, there needed to be two of them for each side (remember, keeping the functionality of the jack and jill bathroom remodel), but there was an element I hadn’t looked into yet…
LED mirrors!
Let me just tell you, if you’ve been sleeping on the thought of LED mirrors for your bathroom remodel, just do it! You will have ZERO regrets.
Out of all of the DIY projects I’ve done, I can’t believe it took me this long to look into backlit mirrors.
Why were LED mirrors my saving grace? Sure they make for great lighting when getting ready in the morning, but they gave a spotlight to the wooden accent wall where the traditional lighting couldn’t.
The lights we installed did a great job of lighting up the room, but that’s where they drew the line.
I mean I wanted this accent wall to be a showstopper!
Having installed these LED mirrors made a world of difference. The room is so well-lit, and the wall is perfectly accentuated. It really brought out the different colors in the pine wood wall, and it made the room feel that much lighter.
One of the coolest features of these mirrors is that when you hold down the touch power button, you can change the hue of the light from warm to cool.
We have them wired to our light switch, so they automatically come on with the rest of the lights when you flip the switch.
Now there is no better place to take selfies! 😏
Another big selling point for me on these mirrors was that they were frameless. They weren’t bordered by a black, brass, or nickel frame. This was super important for this project because I didn’t want to muddy up the wall with too many metal colors.
Adding anything else to that wall would have made it feel way too busy, and the whole point was to go for a simple, minimalist bathroom look.
These mirrors helped me achieve just that – they were the cherry on top of my organic modern bathroom reveal!
The flooring
Then came the flooring for the bathroom remodel. The flooring needed to be classic, but also not distracting to the focal point of the room.
Obviously, anything would be an upgrade to the old bathroom. It had the thin vinyl flooring that originally came with the house that had been completely worn down.
Once again, the size of the room came back to haunt me because I personally love the big 2-foot-long rectangular tiles. But because this small jack-and-jill bathroom design would only allow me to lay a couple of these with minimal impact, I had to go smaller.
After completing our DIY backsplash project several years back, we vowed to never work with tiny intricate patterns again. When making cuts, and lining up with the walls, these types of patterns become increasingly frustrating to work with.
As I said, we were halfway through this part when we found out we had covid, so I’m truly not sure how either of us survived the tedious cutting and placing of the tiles.
But here we are, with a second promise to never go this intricate again. 🙂 We have another bathroom to remodel so stay tuned!
I went with a classic black and white marble mosaic. The white pieces are hexagons, and the black pieces are squares. I think this look is so timeless and brought me back to the older-style bathrooms.
The black tiles accent the vanity hardware really well, and the white tiles accent the vanity top perfectly. From the accent wall to the floor, it flows seamlessly.
The floor pattern is simple enough to not detract from the wood accent wall.
After all of the exhaustion wore off, and the final product was there right in front of us, I can wholeheartedly say it was TOTALLY worth it!
My organic modern bathroom is one of my favorite projects!
This organic modern bathroom reveal came together way better than I could have ever imagined.
The spa-like, airy vibe you get when you step into the bathroom is unlike none other.
This organic modern bathroom reveal with wood accent wall, wood vanity, and brand new fixtures throughout was a dream come true.
