If you constantly wonder, ” What is my home decor style?” You are not alone!

With what seems like hundreds of home decor styles out there, it can be super confusing to know which style you are.

So today, I figured it would be best to break down the 8 most popular interior design styles so that finding your home decor style can be SUPER easy!

The 8 Most Popular Home Decor Styles

  1. Modern
  2. Traditional
  3. Coastal
  4. Farmhouse
  5. Mid-Century Modern
  6. Bohemian
  7. Cottage
  8. Organic Modern

Mix & Matching These Styles

It’s important to note that even though these are the most common home decor style types that I have seen pop up again and again, it doesn’t mean that you need to follow these “styles” strictly.

In fact, some of the coolest house interiors play with mixing two or even three styles together! But don’t worry – that can come later. For now, let’s hop into the basics.

1. Modern Style: Clean, Simple, & Timeless

Modern decor has been increasingly popular over the past couple of years and for good reason—it stays true to its name modern. This home decor style is all about a clean, uncluttered look paired with a warm, neutral color palette. Who wouldn’t love that?

Pendants | Kitchen island | Bar stool | Runner | Couch | Ottoman | Tray | Bookcase | Rug | Accent chairs | Light blue pillows | Dark blue pillows | Lumbar pillow | Oval mirror | Stool | Plant 1 | Plant 2 | Painting | Gold vase

How to achieve the modern look:

  • Focus on a neutral color palette: Think warm whites, soft beiges, and grays with occasional bold accents—like a stunning navy pillow or a sleek black side table.
  • Choose warm, lighter-toned furniture: With this style, always use wood pieces that make your space feel extra cozy.
  • Layer your decor: Layering is the secret to a modern home, especially in the living room. A little bit of styling with rugs, throws and pillows can go a long way.
  • Keep it open and minimal: Open spaces and fewer decorative elements scream a modern layout.
  • Go for clean lines: Find furniture with clean lines and low-profile designs.
  • Find inspo from top brands like Studio McGee: Studio McGee is a goldmine for modern decor ideas. Don’t be afraid to use them to spark inspiration!

2. Traditional Style: Classic & Charming

A classic look – traditional decor is all about embracing classic design elements with a touch of modern flair. Inspired by European design, this style is so lovely and elegant. It is seen in a lot of Colonial and Tudor-style homes. If this is your style of home, take note. ✍️

Copper sofa | Sage pillows | Beige sofa | Antique ballerina print | Pendant light | Race horse print | Table lamp | Coffee table | Sconce | Rattan vase | Accent table | Faux hydrangeas | Chess set | Light switch plate | Rug | Wallpaper | Blue accent chair

How to bring the traditional style into your home:

  • Use rich, regal colors: Deep burgundy, gold, and rich greens are staples of this style. Think about incorporating these colors into your “everyday” pieces like rugs, upholstery, and even walls.
  • Symmetry is key!: Always arrange your furniture and decor in balanced pairs, like matching side tables or perfectly placed armchairs.
  • Go for ornate furniture: My advice? Use thrifting to your advantage with this style. Look for pieces with curved details, carved wood, and luxurious finishes. A tufted sofa or intricately carved dining table can become a stunning centerpiece.
  • Include a touch of luxury: Add a touch of luxury with gold chandeliers, heavy-tailored drapery, and fine textiles like velvet or silk. These will elevate your space while staying true to the traditional aesthetic.

3. Coastal Style: Light, Airy & Beautiful

Coastal decor is inspired by the breezy, laid-back vibes of the beach. However, you don’t need to be by a beach town to enjoy it! This style is perfect for anyone who loves a light, airy aesthetic with natural elements and a soft color palette. While nautical touches can be fun, you can achieve this look without going overboard (pun intended lol).

Rattan mirror | Table lamp | Honeycomb pendant | Sconce | Lumbar pillow (similar) | Scallop pillow | Rug | Scallop curtain (similar) | Fish print | Accent chair | Light blue pillow | Accent table | Driftwood decor | Rattan boxes | Blanket | Scallop Tray | Floor lamp

How to nail the coastal decor look:

  • Keep it light and airy: Start with white or pastel-colored walls to keep your space bright and open.
  • Use a calming color palette: Soft blues, sandy beiges, and neutral tones should be your go-to shades when designing your home.
  • Style with natural textures: Style your space with natural textures like wicker, rattan, and linen to enhance the overall coastal feel.
  • Add subtle nautical accents: If you love the beachy feel, incorporate tasteful and subtle nautical accents like rope details, or driftwood accents. These elements add charm without overwhelming the design.
  • Opt for comfortable furniture: Look for relaxed, comfortable furniture with slipcovers or linen-covered finishes. Think of pieces that invite you to kick back and unwind, just like you would if you were on a coastal retreat🍹.

4. Farmhouse Style: Warm, Cozy & Rustic

Farmhouse decor was made very popular in the mid-2000s to 2010s largely due to the influence of the HGTV show Fixer Upper, hosted by Chip and Joanna Gaines. And while this style had a HUGE impact on so many homes during this era, it doesn’t mean that this style of decor is dead. In fact, with a little bit of updating, this style of decor is still very popular and can work nicely if done correctly.

Pendant | Slipcover chairs | Shaker dining chair | Dining table | Laurel crock | Leather couch | Rug | Sconce | Ladder | Cow print | Magnolia print | Basket | Amber jars | Scalloped Bells | Black stool | Set of 4 western art print | Tea kettle | Copper vase (similar) | Copper stools

The classic farmhouse style elements:

  • Feature natural materials: Incorporate natural materials like wood beams, shiplap walls, and exposed stone into your home’s design.
  • Stick to an earthy color palette: Earthy greens, browns, coppers, and warm naturals are staples for creating a warm, cozy, farmhouse vibe.
  • Bring the outdoors in: Incorporate plenty of fresh indoor plants and greenery to style your space.
  • Include vintage-inspired decor: Style your home with vintage-inspired finds like mason jars, copper pots, vintage tea kettles, and galvanized metal.
  • Go for lived-in furniture: Select furniture pieces that have more of a distressed look. Thrift stores and second-hand shops are perfect for this!
  • Pick cozy couches: Include couches that have soft textures like slipcover sofas to make your space feel extra cozy.

5. Mid-Century Modern Style: Retro & Simple

The mid-century modern interior design style is one of those styles that seems to never go out of style. And for good reason! The design is known for its tapered-legged furniture, unique lighting, and muted color palette.

Curtains | Colorful art print | Bookcase | Pendant | Vase | Wallpaper | Velvet accent chairs | Record stand | Accent table | Table lamp | Arched wood decor | Wood mirror | Green mirror | Sconce | Floor lamp | Bench | Snake plant | Floor pillow | Orange pillow (similar)

How to bring the mid-mod look into your home:

  • Go for mid-mod furniture: Look for pieces with clean lines and iconic tapered legs to bring that classic look. You will also want to stick to a warmer-toned wood-like walnut for a true mid-mod vibe.
  • Play with muted colors: Don’t be afraid to go crazy with colors like mustard yellow, teal, and olive green.
  • Embrace wallpaper: Mid-mod spaces thrive on unique patterns and colors, so don’t shy away from funky, geometric wallpaper to make a statement.
  • Mix textures: Combine wood, velvet, leather, and metal in your designs to create visual interest and depth in your space.
  • Keep your design functional: Mid-century modern style is all about combining beauty with practicality. Choose furniture that’s not just stylish but also functional for everyday living.
  • Get retro with it, baby: That’s right! Thrifting will be your friend when it comes to the mid-century modern design look. From vintage dressers to iconic armchairs, there is no shortage of mid-mod treasures to be found!

6. Bohemian Style: Vibrant & Eclectic

Bohemian decor is vibrant, and fun, and pulls inspiration from so many places around the world. It’s all about mixing and matching pieces to create a space that feels uniquely yours. With its emphasis on bold patterns, layered textures, and rich colors, this style offers sooo much room to express yourself!

Sconce | White lamp | Wood mirror | Mirror | Quilt | Planter | Plant in copper pot | Candle holder (similar) | Brown pillow (similar) | Copper pillow (similar) | Scallop rug | Wallpaper | Accent table | Scallop baskets | Side table | Duck print | Flower print

How to achieve the boho look:

  • Layer your decor: Layer your decor with rugs, pillows, and throws.
  • Incorporate natural materials: Use natural materials like rattan, bamboo, and macramé.
  • Mix and match: It’s okay to break the rules and combine mismatched furniture, vintage finds, and unique decor to create a curated, one-of-a-kind look.
  • Add greenery: Greenery is essential for a boho home so make sure to add fresh greenery where you can! Choose lush plants like monstera, fiddle-leaf figs, or pothos to bring life to your space!
  • Go bold with color: This style is known to embrace jewel tones, warm oranges, and pops of turquoise.

7. Cottage Style: Cozy, Quaint & Curated

The cottage decor is cozy and full of charm. It’s the type of home decor style that makes you feel a sense of nostalgia. This style blends soft colors, vintage treasures, and delicate textures to create spaces that feel inviting and full of character. It’s the kind of decor that feels like stepping into a storybook—and it might just be my favorite on this list!

Plates | Hanging baskets | Pendant | Kitchen rug | Living room rug | Table (similar) | Kitchen chairs | Planter | Faux Ficus | Rain boots | Side table | Table lamp | Ruffle planter | Blue sofa | Eclectic sofa | Green pillows | Ottoman | Mirror | Blanket

How to bring the cottage core style into your home:

  • Embrace cottage-core treasures: Curate your home over time with vintage finds, thrifted gems, and meaningful keepsakes. These pieces tell a story and add the charm that only the “cottage decor” style can bring.
  • Play with soft pastels: Think gentle pinks, sage greens, and sky blues, paired with floral patterns, embroidery, and classic stripes for that perfect cottage look.
  • Layer cozy textures: Add lace curtains, knit throws, and embroidered pillows to soften the space and make it feel extra welcoming.
  • Incorporate heirlooms: Always decorate with plates, handmade ceramics, or family knickknacks that add personality and history to your home.
  • Bring the garden indoors: Fresh flowers, herbs in pots, or even dried bouquets add a touch of nature that completes that cottage aesthetic.

8. Organic Modern Style: Calming & Clean

Organic modern design strikes the perfect balance between simplicity and natural elements. This style combines sleek modern elements with earthy, nature-inspired touches to create the prettiest calming atmosphere.

Pendant | Curtains | Black side table | Marble wall light | Painting | Bowl | Green couch | White pillows (similar) | Floor lamp | Coffee table | Carpet rug | Jute rug (similar) | Upholstered pouf | Marble connect four game | Fiddle leaf fig tree

The classic organic modern style elements:

  • Incorporate natural materials: Bring in wood accents, marble surfaces, and natural textures like jute and linen to ground your space.
  • Layer your decor: Create depth and dimension by layering rugs, throws, and decor pieces for a polished yet organic feel.
  • Stick to earthy tones: Think warm neutrals, soft greens, and rich browns.
  • Highlight greenery: Plants are key in organic modern spaces—add potted greenery or fresh branches.
  • Choose soft, organic furniture shapes: Opt for furniture with rounded edges, clean lines, and natural textures to keep your space inviting and cohesive.

Finding Your Unique Style

Figuring out your home decor style can feel overwhelming, but it’s also such an exciting journey! Whether you’re drawn to the clean lines of modern decor, the nostalgic charm of cottage style, or the calming vibes of organic modern, your home should ultimately reflect you.

Remember, these styles are just starting points. Don’t be afraid to experiment, mix, and match to create a space that feels personal and uniquely yours.
