Working from home has become increasingly popular in the past couple of years. More people are working from home than ever before!
This has been a wonderful change but has caused many to rethink their home office setup. I mean heck, I was using a kitchen chair and a console table for a while!
It can be difficult to figure out men’s home office designs – what to put in them, how to style the space, and what colors to choose. It can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be! And that’s exactly what this blog is here to do. It will give you the much-needed men’s home office inspiration you’ve been looking for!
Whether it’s a little space in the basement or an entire dedicated room, use the following inspo to create the perfect men’s home office!
1. Dark Accent Wall with Wooden Accents
For the first home office idea for him, I’m excited to finally share my husband’s office which has been long overdue! Use your desired dark color to paint the focus wall of the space (where the desk goes), and keep the rest of the room relatively light. Sprinkle in some wooden accents – for his office, we chose walnut wooden accents which included the color of the desk, bookshelves, and side table.
For the exact breakdown of the items in this space and the color of the wall, you can Shop Our Small Masculine Office here! I have so many people asking me about the desk – we made it ourselves! For under $400! And the best part is that I have an entire blog that will walk you through exactly how we did it so you can recreate it as well called DIY Butcher Block Desk for Your Home Office.
2. Furniture = Inviting
This Faux Leather & Metal Accent Chair is seriously so stunning! The color is beautiful and has the perfect warm undertone to make your space feel cozy. If you are looking for a unique chair for your space, this will be the perfect addition to your home office. The intricate legs and the small wood details are SO good for the price!
Plus, if you have some extra space you’re trying to fill in your home office, think about adding this chair as extra seating! This combination of chairs and a small side table creates an inviting feeling in your room.
3. Make It Playful (For The Gamers)
It’s so important to add your own personal hobbies into your space. By doing this, you can really make your space feel like home and a place you want to spend your time.
If you are a gamer, try adding subtle gaming pieces like these wood PlayStation symbols or a purposeful holder to place your controller. This office inspiration is the PERFECT mix of work and play!
4. Speakers Are Important for the Music Lover
And I don’t know if I’ve ever met a non-music lover, so speakers are essential for a manly office! If you’re looking for a pair that look as amazing as they sound, be sure to check out the Klipsch Promedia Heritage 2.1 system.
5. Combine Work and Play for Productivity and Creativity
We all have our hobbies. Whether it’s music, gaming, or reading, set up your home office to easily accompany both! Add your keyboard, guitar, gaming monitors, etc so that as soon as the day is over, you’re ready to kick it into play mode. Now if you’re multitasking at work, your secret is safe here lol!
6. Light Fixtures Add Elegance
You want an office that’s full of light when it matters! A home office that’s poorly lit, no matter how amazing it looks, will diminish the look you were going for, and hurt the functionality of the room.
If you’re going for an elegant look in your home office, you can really capture this by good use of chandeliers, pendants, sconces, and bookshelf lighting. Have a ceiling fan you never use? Consider replacing it with a nice flush-mounted light or beautiful chandelier that brings your eye up!
7. Beautiful Artwork Adds Sophistication
Whether it’s one big piece of art, or it’s a collage of smaller pieces on the wall, art is a great addition to any office! Depending on the pieces of art that you pick, it can add a sophisticated look to any office.
8. Bookcases Add Height
It doesn’t matter if you have 8-foot ceilings or 12-foot ceilings, bookcases add height to any office! One of the things I see a lot of people leave out of their home office is tall furniture that brings your eye up. A desk, chair, and lamp are essentials, but you need something that creates the illusion of height. And bookshelves are the easiest way to achieve that!
9. Cabinetry is Functional
Cabinetry is perfect when thinking about masculine modern home office ideas. You can paint the cabinets a dark color, such as dark blue or dark green. But best of all, you’ll create extra space to store those items that might not have a home or might be currently crammed in a corner somewhere.
You can keep your cabinetry doors partially see-through with glass doors, or a rattan style as seen here. This can be your cabinet to showcase books, awards, or anything else you can think of! Then you can keep other cabinets closed off, like the lower cabinets, for other less showcase-y items.
10. Pegboards Help Keep You Organized
Pegboards can easily be attached to the wall beside your desk, or behind your monitors. They’re great because they keep things organized up and out of your way until you need them again. Hang headphones, cables, or any other gadgets! It’s a plus that pegboards can simply add a vibe to the room themselves.
11. Fireplaces Add Warmth (Literally!)
How cool would it be to have a fireplace in your office? Maybe you have a room you were thinking about for your office, but it has a fireplace. Let this image settle down any anxieties about whether or not it’s weird to have a fireplace in your office. It is definitely a fire idea 😏 Especially since you can remodel the fireplace and make it look really cool!
12. Painted Ceilings Create Dimension and Mood
Chances are every ceiling in your house is the same color: white. This may be your chance to take a leap of faith! A manly office can have some mood to it, and what better way to create a moody scene than painting the ceiling the same color as the walls?
A dark ceiling creates dimension to the space and makes you feel like you’re entering into a whole other house. This is your sign to go for it!
13. Rugs Can Soften Up a Masculine Office
Since a lot of manly home office ideas include dark colors, rugs can create a much-needed break in the darkness. You can choose a neutral rug that contrasts dark walls and furniture. Or you can choose a patterned rug to jazz things up a bit. If you have a lot going on in the office, stick to a simpler rug, while simpler offices can have more patterns in the rug.
14. Board and Batten Walls Elevate Any Space
If you’ve read some of my other blogs, you probably already know that I’m a HUGE fan of board and batten walls! They take any builder-grade room and can immediately elevate the space. I mean, if all you did in your home office was an accent board and batten wall, that could be enough!
If you like the wall seen here, I have a step-by-step guide on exactly how to create a board and batten wall.
15. Beadboard Paneling Makes a Wall Interesting
Who doesn’t love some beadboard? Beadboard has such a unique texture to it, something every home office could use more of. The great thing is that you can buy beadboard paneling from Lowe’s or Home Depot and cut it to your dimensions. But it gets even simpler with paintable beadboard wallpaper!
This will be one of the easiest, high-impact additions you can make to an office for a relatively low cost. Adding it to the backs of bookcases or built-ins creates a really cool vibe!
16. Plants Bring an Organic (and Healthy) Vibe
Plants are always a great addition to any home office! In a space that may capture a lot of stress, plants can help soothe the mood a little bit. In general, plants can help reduce stress, and encourage focus. Plus they just look good in an office setting!
17. Mood Lighting for Every Scenario
Govee and Philips Hue are the leaders in cool, colorful smart lighting for home offices. So if you’ve ever seen pictures of cool lighting, chances are it’s one of these guys! Govee tends to be less expensive, but Philips Hue is better quality.
My husband and I have Philips Hue bulbs throughout our house, as well as our home offices! We are able to control them with Google Assistant (Alexa works too). But in your man’s home office, he can change these any color he wants to create different vibes in the room.
18. Built-Ins Are Efficient and Smart for a Home Office
Check out this stunning built-in! Built-ins are perfect for a manly office because you can customize them to your space, and your man. Want large cabinets and a small desk? No problem! Want a little alcove for your desk in between two cabinets? Go for it!
Built-ins are perfect for storage and they only take up one wall, so it’s a big impact. Incorporate lighting for an even more professional look.
19. Open Bookshelves Create the Illusion of Space
If you’re working with a small home office, open bookshelves might be your best option! This is because closed bookcases can sometimes feel a little bulky in a small space. If you want bookshelves but are worried about this particular thing, give the open concept a try!
That’s what we did in my husband’s office remodel. These bookshelves from Amazon are perfect for any room with 8-foot ceilings. They may be a little short if you have taller ceilings. Check out the first idea on this post again to see them in action!
20. Modern Boho His and Her Office Space
I’m throwing this option on here because I know in some cases, a his and her office may be the only option you have. I think these guys did an outstanding job with this modern boho office reveal. If you and your significant other are both working from home, you may be limited on space to accommodate two separate offices.
This particular office is a great mix for both him and her.
21. Outdoor Elements Scream “Manly Office”
Just take a look at this desk – it’s absolutely breathtaking! Bringing nature into the office really elevates the space. One of the best ways to do this is with the focus point of the room – the desk! There are so many natural desks out there – shop locally to find a great woodworker to completely customize your desk.
22. Minimalistic Designs Showcase Refinement
Simple designs are a sign of refinement and professionalism. If you’re not going for something over the top, a minimalistic design still has a huge impact on a home office.
Stick to one color for all of the walls (and maybe the ceiling if you’re feeling it), simple wall decor (such as the abstract art shown here), and a desk that gives off a bold look.
23. White and Black Create a Crisp, Sleek Look
A lot of masculine home offices have a dark mood to them. When you equally mix white and black colors together, you’re left with a crisp, clean design. Pair it with some wood for warm undertones? Ooo now you’ve hit the jackpot!
The dark office isn’t for every guy out there, so this may be your go-to when thinking about home office ideas for him!
24. Lamps Help Brighten Up a Space
Pun absolutely intended. But adding a nice floor lamp or table lamp to a man’s office can help brighten the room, and perfectly fill in space if you need to. Brightening up the space is especially important in a darker office. It will still have the moody vibe, and you’ll be able to see where you’re going. 😉
25. Sophistication in Small Spaces
Are you looking for small home office ideas for him? You can truly create an office with very little space. You could even create an office in a walk-in closet if you wanted to (known as a cloffice)! Basically, I’m just trying to prove that you don’t need this big, grandiose space to DIY your home office.
You can accomplish the same sophisticated look with minimal amounts of space, as seen in this picture. I think this is such a cool small office idea!
26. Cable Management is Key in Any Office
A common theme you may notice throughout this blog is cable management. Cable management is absolutely crucial when you’re dreaming up your home office design. You don’t want cables to be hanging all underneath your desk, or visibly running across the ground.
I have an entire post dedicated to cable storage ideas – it has a nice blend of both cable storage and cable management ideas.

27. Personalize Your Office to Make It YOU!
When styling a masculine office, you don’t need to stick to professional, studious decor. I mean in reality, how many people besides you are actually going to be seeing it? Well if you’re my husband, I’m sharing his office with all of you lol. But the best home offices are an extension of yourself. Someone should be able to walk in and be like, “Yup this is definitely YOUR office”.
As you can see in my husband’s office, he clearly has a love for music. Make sure when you design your office, you give it that personal touch! You don’t want to go overboard, just a couple of pieces here and there that blend well into the rest of the room.
28. Gold Accents Perfectly Compliment Dark Colors
Something you’ll see A LOT when looking for home office ideas is that they have gold accents. This can be seen in light fixtures, cabinet hardware, or even decor! This is because gold looks sooo good with dark colors, especially dark green and dark blue. When you saw this picture, what was the first thing that caught your attention? Probably the gold sconces!
You’ll want to use it sparingly though. Too much will start to clash together and dull the effect you were going for – remember, it’s an accent. Stick with 3-7 gold accents in one room for the best impact (not including small hardware that you see on cabinetry).

29. Symmetry Balances Out a Home Office
When you add a bookshelf to one side of your office, the same bookshelf may look good on the other side as well. The same goes for built-ins, they look best when they are symmetrical! Symmetry can really balance out a room so that one side of the room doesn’t feel like it’s lacking.
It’s also an easy way to fill in blank space. Most people have their desks in the center and then work outward from that in their design. There’s no better way to say it than it just looks really good!
30. Curtains Can Warm Up a Room
Men, don’t be afraid of curtains! A lot of times they add that extra bit of warmth and texture that the room may have been lacking. In most cases, stick to a neutral-colored curtain. Doing so will work in just about any space, and the key is for the curtain to blend in seamlessly, and not draw attention.
Unless you are purposefully drawing attention to the curtain with a cool design or color, stick to neutral colors!
31. Colors Can Make or Break Your Space
Whether you want a dark moody home office, or you want to stick to a lighter color, your wall color is crucial! Colors are so important because they do impact the way you think and feel. There is a reason that when you look up home office ideas, most of them are blue and green.
Blue stimulates your brain, which ultimately leads to higher productivity. It helps you stay focused. Green translates to calm, reassurance, and efficiency. You create a mood when you darken them, hence a moody office. But don’t let that stop you from choosing the color that’s perfect for your office!
Really think about the colors that you want to be surrounded by every second that you work. Black is bold, but can sometimes be a little overpowering depending on the person. That’s why if you choose black for your office, you really have to love it. But that’s the great thing about paint – if you don’t like it, it’s one of the easiest fixes you can do in your home.
Or you can always do one accent wall. That’s what my husband and I did for his office makeover with a really dark green. He didn’t want it to be overwhelming so one accent wall was perfect! We went with Black Forest Green by Benjamin Moore – it’s so dark that it looks black in certain lighting, but as soon as the light hits, you can see the subtle hint of green which is SO beautiful. I highly recommend Black Forest Green!
