A lot changed when both of us started permanently working from home, so it was time for a home office revamp for my husband! Need help designing your man’s office? Hopefully, this gives some ideas to help you.
When we redid this office, we spent countless hours searching for the things to give it the exact vibe he wanted for the space. So I know what it’s like to be on the other side. I’m so happy with this outcome – feel free to do exactly what we did!

Desk
This is the first thing we get asked about! We actually made this desk ourselves with butcher block and some desk legs we found on Amazon. It is actually EXTREMELY easy to do and will save you a TON of money in the end when compared to buying a desk online. I absolutely love the way it turned out!
If you want to recreate this small masculine office desk exactly how you see it in the pictures, I have a step-by-step guide – check out my post DIY Butcher Block Desk for Your Home Office.
This Hardwood Reflections butcher block is so easy to work with. I find the 60-inch by 30-inch the perfect size for a desk!
Wooden Bookcases
I love, love, love the design of these bookshelves! We went with the Brown Walnut/Black color. These greatly add to the vibe of the room, with the black framing and walnut shelves perfectly matching the desk. Having one on either side balances out the room and adds height – which is especially great in a room with 8-foot ceilings.
The open concept keeps the room feeling nice and spacious without bulking it up like regular bookshelves would do. This is especially important in a small room like this one. Aside from the desk, these are definitely my favorite additions! Btw for the price, these are totally worth it! 10 out of 10, would buy again!
Klipsch Speakers with Sub
Finally, some speakers my husband and I can agree on! If you’ve read my other posts, chances are you’ve come to realize that my husband loves his music, speakers, and technology. When I was helping him design his office, it was obvious that speakers were going to be an essential piece of the puzzle.
Knowing the design at stake, he found these speakers called Klipsch Promedia Heritage 2.1 speakers that are actually stunning!
It was an immediate yes from me – I mean look at these things! They have a walnut finish with heathered gray grills to cover the fronts, which creates a classic, mid-century modern look. They’re Bluetooth so it’s easy to connect your phone. And what really surprised me was the overall sound quality and bass that these produced! As my husband says, “You can never go wrong with Klipsch!”
Walnut Side Table
If you haven’t been able to tell yet, we’re really sticking to the walnut theme in this small masculine office! Walnut brings a warm, manly vibe to the space, and this walnut side table is no exception.
The black iron legs connecting to the top of the round walnut table top are such a cool design. It’s small enough to fit in the space which is another huge win with this one!
Curtain Rod
Yes, there is even the most subtle hint of walnut on the curtain rod! Seriously, unless you are looking for it in the office, you wouldn’t even be able to tell it’s there. But just for walnut sake, we did it anyway. This curtain rod is sleek, matte black, and ties in the dark accent wall to the rest of the room really nicely.
Curtains
We wanted to go with a neutral color so that we didn’t steal the show from the accent wall. We found these natural-colored curtains from Target that fit the bill perfectly. The ones in his small masculine office are the Twilight Taupe color.
Light Globes
You may or may not be able to find these still. My husband has the IKEA Fado table lamps from IKEA, which are actually really cool if you’re able to snag a couple! He got these several years back and said he paid the “premium” price and bought them through Amazon because they were never available on IKEA.
He pairs these with his Philips Hue bulbs which can change a bunch of different colors and with the glass globes, the colors look so awesome!
Unfortunately, it looks like you can’t get them on Amazon or IKEA anymore. They may be discontinued. If you truly love them, at least there are really similar ones on Amazon!
Herman Miller Mirra 2 Chair
There used to be a chair in this small masculine office that was hard as a rock! After moving to a permanent work from home role, we figured that wasn’t going to cut it anymore. The Herman Miller Mirra 2 chair is extremely comfortable and ergonomic to eliminate any of the back pain you get with a traditional office chair. It’s expensive, but when you’re using it every single day, it’s 100% a worthwhile investment. Health over everything!
Desk Mat
A nice touch to the desk is this office desk mat! He has the Gray/Silver color. It acts as a mousepad, a place for your keyboard, and protection for when you want to bring food and drinks around while you work. Generally speaking, it just makes the desk have a clean, organized look to it!
I have one in my office too and my favorite thing is that it acts as one big mouse pad. No need to worry about continuously readjusting your mouse on a small mouse pad!
Desk Chair Mat
At some point in time, I’m sure you have dealt with a terrible chair mat that cracks and never fully uncurls from the box.
Well, look no further for the perfect chair mat! This one is the Gorilla Grip chair mat and it is STRONG! Oh my gosh – seriously! It is shipped flat so you don’t have to worry about it curling up on you, and the material it’s made out of is so strong. I would never worry about cracking it with normal everyday use.
My husband has had this one for several years and it’s still in perfect condition. The only downside, which goes for all chair mats, is that it can tend to slide a couple of inches here and there. We still need to get some clear carpet tape or something along those lines. But once we get that, I truly have no complaints!
Trash Can
Nothing but a generic metal trash can here 😉 The only comment on this one is that I felt the metal can was a nice offset from the dark colors of the wall and walnut furniture!
Wall Color
This accent wall is Black Forest Green by Benjamin Moore in his small masculine office. We spent SOOO much time trying to figure out the color of this wall! The whole office was agreeable gray at the start, but we figured if we painted one wall it could make a big impact. We almost went with straight-up black, but I kept thinking that it would be wayyyy too dark, and I knew he would get sick of that fast.
I came across Black Forest Green by Benjamin Moore because it’s dark enough that when there isn’t much light, it looks almost black. But in the light, the beautiful dark green comes out and it PERFECTLY accentuates the walnut vibe of the room. We are both so happy with how this looks, and I would recommend Black Forest Green over and over again. It’s such a beautiful color, especially for a masculine home office design.
Technology
Clock
This little clock perfectly fits right under a monitor. The one that we got for this office looks to be no longer available on Amazon, but this is an extremely similar one, which appears to be the same size as well. It’s nice to refer to for meetings, or just to have a modern-looking clock for your desk!
Computer Monitors
The right monitor is everything when it comes to working from home. Our favorite brand is HP because they are great quality, look great, and don’t totally break the budget. Plus they do exactly what we need them to do – there is no need to go super expensive when all you’re doing is looking at Excel files!
The bigger monitor is a 27” and the one on the left is a 24” monitor. The 27” is honestly the perfect size for a 60”x30” desk. I would definitely recommend that size for your main monitor if you’re following this same setup! And 24” is just fine for a secondary monitor.
Dock
Sticking with HP, this USB-C dock is super compact and perfect for interchanging different laptops – in my husband’s case, his work laptop and personal laptop for music. The size of this thing is its biggest positive. You don’t have to lock into a bulky dock and as you can see, this can easily fit under a desk riser and stay out of your work space.
Mouse
My husband has the Logitech MX Master 2S mouse. They have a newer version of this, but there were two main reasons he got this at the time.
1) It has an “infinite scroll feature” where you can flick the scroll in one direction and it will continue scrolling for a very long time (or until you stop it). 2) There’s a side scroller that allows you to scroll from left to right.
After working in Excel sheets with thousands of rows and plenty of columns, My husband said he will never use another mouse again!
Audio Interface
This home office also doubles as a music room, if you couldn’t tell from the pictures! My husband is superrrr into music and likes to produce as a hobby.
The Scarlett 2i2 audio interface allows him to plug and play, control the volume of his speakers, and use his headphones all in one centralized location.
Decor
Planter Pots
What goes great with a masculine office space? Plants! They look perfect against the walnut furniture. I got these planter pots from Target. You can get them in a few different sizes to accommodate your space and plants.
iPhone Decor
After searching around for cool home office decor ideas, we stumbled across the Grid Studio brand. They have a bunch of different framed technology which adds a touch of nostalgia while also being the perfect conversation starter. They have phones, gaming controllers, and a few other items – these make such cool gifts!
My husband has the iPhone 5 frame since this was the first iPhone he ever got!
Books
A bookcase, and home office, aren’t complete without a nice array of books! Collect your favorite books, or buy some that have been on your list for a while, and organize them on your bookshelf. Hardcovers always look the best when displayed on a bookshelf, most of the time without their cover!
Some of my top recommendations from my husband’s shelves are featured above.
Baskets
We purchased these baskets a long time ago at HomeGoods, so naturally they are no longer available. But there are so many options out there for baskets! My goal with these baskets was I wanted them to be an anchor to the bottom of the shelf, making the shelf look grounded.
The basket had to fill in the space of the whole shelf, and as you can see, I got extremely close. It’s nearly as wide as the shelf and is the perfect height to cover most of the space between the two shelves. Definitely aim for the same thing if you’re trying to achieve the same look.
Pillow
I randomly found this pillow while strolling through Target looking for something completely unrelated, but isn’t that how it always goes in Target??
I knew immediately that this would look perfect on his chair, and he agreed! It ties in the green accent wall with the other side of the room, which really pulls everything together. Sometimes it’s the little things!
This pillow is no longer available, unfortunately. However, I found this pillow that gives a similar vibe. Check out this Modern Minimal Color Block Throw Pillow on Society6.
Plane
Last but not least – this cute little Delta plane! My husband loves Delta so it was only right to include it as a piece of bookshelf decor. You can find any of the major airlines on Amazon!
