So you bought a super soft, cuddly throw blanket for your couch. It’s perfect to wrap up in for movies, and looks beautiful… but how do you style a throw blanket when it’s not in use?
Contrary to the thought of just throwing your throw blanket over the couch and calling it a day, there’s slightly more to it!
We want to throw…with purpose lol. 😉
How do you put a throw blanket on a couch? In this post, I have 9 ideas for decorating your couch with a throw blanket for you. Be sure to stick around for the dos and don’ts of throwing blankets on a couch!
How to Put a Throw Blanket on a Couch
Throw blankets are couch decorations…or at least that’s one way to think about it lol. You might already have a couple of ideas in mind on how to place a throw blanket on your couch.
But you might see something you’ve never tried before, and you may just love it!
You’re going to need a couple of things to pull off the coziest of couches.
1. Picture-Perfect
When thinking about how to put a throw blanket on a couch, this option never disappoints.
I call it picture-perfect because it makes your couch look nice, tidy, and, well…perfect! This throw blanket idea is popular and will have your blanket draping beautifully over the couch to be displayed at all angles.
Styling Your Throw Blanket: Simply fold your blanket into thirds. Drape it longways over the back of your couch. Let it cascade down the back cushion, and over the seat cushion. Just slightly tuck in at the back of the seat cushion for a form-fitted look.
This look can be achieved either on the center of your couch, off-centered, far left or far right of your couch. Style your throw blanket all by itself, under a pillow, or under a couple of pillows! It’s up to you!
2. The Snug Tuck
Another idea for throw blankets on a couch is a subtle fold on top of the couch seat.
This style is all about gently tucking the throw blanket under the pillows! When you decorate with throw blankets, this look gives your couch corner a little more texture and a pop of color if needed.
Styling Your Throw Blanket: Fold your throw blanket into thirds, and then fold it in half to make the overall length shorter. The throw blanket can drape over the front of the seat cushion by a little or a lot. If going for “a lot”, just be sure the blanket stops a couple of inches from the floor.
It’s best to stick near the arm of your couch for this one. That’s where you’re going to have all of your adorable pillows!

3. Over the Arm Style – Formal
If you’re thinking about how to decorate a couch with a throw blanket, but don’t want that blanket in the way, this “over the arm” style may be your go-to!
When you need it, you can just reach over and grab it. You won’t need to shimmy around to free the throw blanket from underneath you. 😏
It looks nice and when wondering how to put a throw blanket on a couch, it doesn’t get much simpler than this!
Styling Your Throw Blanket: Fold your throw blanket into thirds or smaller depending on how long your couch arm is. Then fold in half until it’s long enough to drape over the couch arm. You want it a couple of inches from the bottom of the couch.
But you want it short enough so you don’t have a lot of the throw blanket bunched up on the couch seat. Then bring in your pillows to lean against the corner to give a finished look!
4. Over the Arm Style – Relaxed
It’s the same as the “over the arm” style”, but this time we’re going a bit more casual.
This one makes your couch look warm and snuggly because it’s a little more inviting. It’s as if the throw wants you to pick it up!
I mean, you could probably pull off this look without much effort at all. When you’re exiting the room, it’s almost a natural throw onto the couch.
Styling Your Throw Blanket: The majority of the blanket is going to rest on the couch seat, in front of your pillows, and cascade down the front of the seat. Allow the end of the throw blanket to drape over the arm of the couch – hanging no more than halfway down the side of the couch.
No need to make the throw look precisely placed, nice, or neat. This throw blanket idea for your couch is all about being cuddly and relaxed.
After all, cozy is casual and that’s exactly what we’re going for here!
5. The Chaise Charm
There’s something about a blanket draped across the corner of an ottoman or chaise that just looks right.
When thinking about how to put a throw blanket on a couch, this idea is very natural. It adds a bit of interest to an area that may not get much love in the design department.
I love draping my throw over the corner of my ottoman – it complements my diagonally placed ottoman tray perfectly! And all you have to do is reach down and pull it over you when you need some extra warmth.
Styling Your Throw Blanket: Fold your throw blanket into thirds and diagonally drape it over the corner of your ottoman or chaise. If the blanket is too long, fold it in half to make it shorter!

6. The Snuggle Nook
Like a more relaxed version of the “picture-perfect”. But this throw blanket idea for your couch will have your blanket casually cascading down your couch.
This is a great way for how to style a throw blanket on a couch when you want to stage your home for guests. It looks purposeful, comforting, and tidy!
Styling Your Throw Blanket: Bunch up a corner of your throw blanket and lay it over the top of your couch. It can puddle on the couch seat, or stay narrow to cascade down the front of your seat cushion.
Be sure to gently push the blanket to the back of the couch seat so it’s more form-fitted to your couch. You don’t want the blanket lifting off your couch like you’re building a blanket fort (although I’m all for that 😂)!
You can pull off this look on either side of your sofa with or without pillows.
7. Bundle Bliss
Just like the title implies, when you’re searching how to put a throw blanket on a couch, it CAN be this easy.
This look screams blanket queen, and I would know because at least one of my throw blankets is always in this position haha. Some might say I have too many blankets, but I say there’s no such thing!
Anyways, while this “throw on a sofa” idea may seem silly… if you make it purposeful, it 100% works!
This couch throw blanket idea works best with smaller throws. That means a standard-sized throw or smaller. A queen-sized blanket in this scenario may look a little bit messy because it’s too large.
Styling Your Throw Blanket: Bunch your throw blanket up on the seat of the couch, next to your pillows or in one of the corners. Shape the bundle into a loose circle. Pull the edges of the blanket down onto the seat of the couch to give it a bit more of a defined look.
This will make it look like you have a cute little blanket puddle on your sofa!
8. The Seat Saver
For a classic way how to place a throw blanket on a couch, a nice folded blanket never looks bad!
This idea is great especially if you have multiple throw blankets – some for function and others for decoration on your couch.
Am I the only one that has multiple blankets in every room of my house? LOL
But even if this is your only blanket, everyone loves a folded blanket. And this idea is too simple not to incorporate into your space if the other ideas just aren’t for you!
Styling Your Throw Blanket: Fold your blanket as if you were putting it away in a closet for storage. It should be no more than 2’x2’ across. Then, sit it on any seat of your sofa. Place it anywhere but the absolute center of your couch. Finally, angle it for a subtle yet stylish, purposeful look.
9. Blanket Basket
This post is about how to put a throw blanket on a couch, but this idea is a great alternative if you want a blanket-free couch. Plus, it keeps your throw blanket close enough to your couch when you need it!

Styling Your Throw Blanket: Roll your blankets up and stand them straight up in your basket. Then take your small throw and drape it over the edge of the basket for a magazine-worthy look!
How to Fold a Throw Blanket on a Couch
Just remember the thirds rule! For a standard-sized throw blanket, this works really well.
Hold your blanket up by the two top corners. The longer side of the blanket should be vertical. Take your left hand and fold the blanket in about a third of the overall width.
Now take your right hand, and fold the blanket about the same length you just did – the sides should overlap in the middle.
And that’s all there is to it! If you need your blanket to be shorter for throw blanket positioning on the couch arm, simply fold it in half to cut the size in half.
Want an even narrower-looking throw blanket?
You can also fold it in fourths. Hold your blanket in a similar position as before. Fold both edges to the center line. Now bring the new edges you just created together to fold over the center line.
When thinking about how to fold a throw blanket to decorate your couch, you’ll only want the folded edges visible. Not the actual edges of the blanket showing, unless they are cute with some detailing or tassels.
The Dos and Don’ts of Throw Blankets on a Couch
How to style a throw blanket comes with a few dos and don’ts to make sure your throw blanket looks picture-perfect every time!
The Dos
- Ensure your throw blanket is a couple of inches higher than the bottom of the couch.
- Use a standard throw blanket size for the best results. If you have a queen-sized blanket, it’s a lot of blanket to work with. You can still pull off the more relaxed throw blanket ideas with larger blankets, but the standard size works best for the others.
- Throw blankets can be decorative, functional, OR both.
- You CAN have multiple throw blankets on your couch. Some could be decorative, some could be functional. I would recommend sticking to 3 max so you don’t have blanket overload!
- Make your throw blanket look purposeful, even in the more relaxed positions. As long as you follow the throw blanket styling tips above, you’ll be golden!
- Your throw blanket can be an accent to your couch and surrounding space. And we’re all about beautiful, cozy accents here.
The Don’ts
- Your throw blanket should never touch the floor or come close to it.
- Never just throw your entire blanket, unfolded, over the back of the couch. This is not the type of throw blanket styling you’re going for!
- Don’t completely drape your throw blanket in a way that will completely cover up a pillow. Always let those adorably arranged throw pillows shine through.
- Your throw blanket should not be the same exact color as your couch. While it can be an off-shade, you want your blanket to have a little more attention than just blending in.
- Ensure the focal point of your throw blanket is on the couch as opposed to too much hanging behind your couch.
Throw Blankets for the Seasons
The great thing about throw blankets on the couch is they’re easily interchangeable if you’re someone who likes to keep up with the seasons. Just like me. 😊
With that being said, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with keeping the same throw blanket draped over your sofa all year long!
Here are the perfect throw blanket qualities for the two major season changes.
Throw Blanket for Summer
- In the summertime, stick to light and airy colors. When you come in from the hot outdoors, the lightweight look is going to be much appreciated as it cools off the room.
- If you’re someone who likes to keep things simple, the easiest route is to go with neutral colors. As long as you can find a throw blanket color slightly off from your couch, this is a super simple way to pull off a summer vibe. Neutrals are good for any time of year!
- As for the look and feel of the throw blanket, go with lightweight throw blankets.
Throw Blanket for Winter
- During the winter, this is your time to go for a bold and dark look. These colors give off warm and cozy vibes, which are perfect for the cold season: dark green, brown/copper, navy blue, dark yellow, and black.
- For the look and feel, go with a chunky knit that will make you want to wrap up in it and turn on the fireplace.
- Again, you can never go wrong with neutrals, regardless of the season.
Make your couch the coziest it can be with a throw blanket!
Whether you’re trying to figure out how to position throws on a couch, or just trying to switch things up, I hope these ideas help inspire you!
And in the end, go with a throw blanket idea that works in your space and that you absolutely love. That’s the most important thing!
