Okay well, maybe you don’t want your guests to stay forever LOL. But you do want to give them a serene guest room oasis that they won’t be able to stop talking about!
How many times have you stayed as a guest in someone’s house, but felt awkward to ask when you needed something? Let’s be honest, that feeling is the WORST. You don’t want to come off as needy, but ultimately it’s not your fault – this was a miss on the host’s part. Now it’s your turn to play the host, and be everything to your guests that you’ve always wanted!
Sometimes it’s those extra little touches that make your guests feel right at home! Being two steps ahead of your guests will make them feel welcomed and comfortable in your home.
And this post is overflowing with everything you and your guests could ever think of and more! That way you can do less of the thinking and more of the prepping to get ready for your guest’s stay.
1. Mattress Topper
Sometimes investing in the best, highest quality mattress just isn’t doable for a guest room. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t have the most comfortable bed ever for them.
A good solution to this problem is a mattress topper. Your guests will definitely thank you for this!
This is the mattress topper that I swear by! It’s unbelievably comfortable and provides the extra softness that your guests will appreciate! I have had almost every guest that stays with me comment on how much they love it. That’s why I’m starting off this list of guest room must-haves with it!
And if your guests require something a little more firm, it takes all but 10 seconds to remove.
We have the 3-inch queen foam topper but it also comes in a couple of other thicknesses and bed sizes!
2. Sheets & An Extra Clean Set
Having a really nice set of sheets in a guest room is a MUST when thinking of guest room essentials.
I would recommend this sheet set if you are going for a cozy guest room. It has over 300,000 reviews on Amazon. That is one of the most amount of reviews I have ever seen on an Amazon product!
The best idea that I have EVER heard about guest bedroom sheets came from my mom. Moms always know best!
The advice was to always have a second pair of clean sheets folded and ready to go for your guests before they even arrive. When their stay comes to an end, they can take their old sheets off the bed & replace them with the fresh clean sheet set that you had ready to go.
It’s a win-win. They don’t feel bad for leaving a dirty room. And you are able to quickly throw their dirty sheets in the wash, fold and put them back in the room for when the next guests arrive.

3. Extra Blankets
Being the “super-host” that you are, I know you already have an extra blanket in mind for your guests!
But, to make it an even more enjoyable night of sleep, I would recommend having at least 2 extra blankets in your guest bedroom. You never know how many blankets it takes to make sure your guests feel extra snuggly!
4. A Super Comfortable Pillow
To finish off this perfect night of sleep for your guests, you need to have a SUPER comfortable pillow.
I recommend the Coop Original Pillow. Not only do I recommend this pillow… I can’t stop talking about it! This pillow is the pillow of all pillows! It is so comfortable and allows for a great night of sleep. Your guests will LOVE them!

5. Pillow Spray
If you really want to ask yourself, “How do I make my guest room feel like a hotel?”, this pillow spray is the way to do it!
Spray it on their pillows before they arrive and when they go to lay down that night, they will feel like they are in a fancy hotel!
Seriously this pillow spray is SO good. You have to try it!

6. Wi-Fi Password Sign
When staying at someone else’s house, it’s always one of the first questions asked – “What’s your Wi-Fi password?”.
Instead of waiting until your guests ask the question, why not add an adorable Wi-Fi password sign to your guest room? Plus, it will be so nice for them to refer back to just in case they need it again for another device!
It’s the extra little touches that make your guests feel right at home!
7. Google Mini
If you want your guests to be extra spoiled, put a Google Mini in the guest bedroom. Or if you’re an Alexa house, you can go with the Echo Dot.
What do these devices do? Well, they’re voice-activated and answer all of your guests’ requests like knowing the weather, listening to music while they get ready, and much more.
This is definitely an above-and-beyond item on our list of guest room essentials, but hey, I said I would cover everything! 😏

8. Basket With Snacks & Water Bottles
We’ve all been there… You’re staying at someone else’s house, it’s late at night, and you start to get hungry. You feel slightly awkward going to get food out of someone else’s kitchen so you decide to just wait until morning to satisfy the munchies.
If you know that feeling, then you know how important it is to supply your guests with some yummy simple snacks.
Plus, it’s just an adorable idea that your guests will love!
Find a super cute basket and fill it with their favorite snacks. Maybe some fruit like apples or bananas, a couple of protein bars, their favorite munchies, and maybe even some of their favorite candy (if you are a super thoughtful host). Don’t forget to add water bottles as a finishing touch to this guest bedroom must-have!
9. A Mirror
Having a mirror in your guest bedroom is a must! It may not be something that you initially think of but it’s a pretty important one.
You want your guests to have a spot where they can get ready in the morning or check their whole outfit before the day ahead.
Most homeowners have some type of mirror where they can see it all. Having a full-length mirror is preferred and will make it just as easy for them to get ready in your house!

10. A Personalized Coffee Mug
If you have someone in your life that visits regularly, it could be a sweet idea to get them a coffee or tea mug of their own.
Most people have their favorite mugs but obviously aren’t going to bring them on a trip. This could be a way to make them feel a little more at home and super special.
It will be something that they will look forward to using every time they come! Definitely one of the most thoughtful guest essentials ideas.
Almost like saying “Your home is my home” without having to actually say it! 🙂
11. Eyemasks & Earplugs
It’s hard to sleep in a place that is not your own! Why not make it easier for your guests by providing an eye mask and earplugs?
Maybe there is more light coming through the windows than they are used to. Maybe they can’t sleep with the sound of your ceiling fan.
Whatever the reason may be, providing them with an eyemask and earplugs is an extremely thoughtful guest essential to add to their room!
12. A Noise Machine
There is a reason that a lot of Airbnb’s have noise machines – they provide the perfect amount of white noise to help you fall asleep in a place you’re not used to.
The subtle sound that a noise machine makes can have a huge impact on how quickly your guests are able to fall asleep and stay asleep. It’s a great investment and can be something that you own for years!
I highly recommend this white noise machine. It creates noise through an internal fan and has the ability to change how loud it is just by twisting the machine.
I first stumbled upon this exact one when I was staying in an Airbnb and thought it was a genius idea for a guest room. So of course I was immediately sold and bought one for my guest room!
13. Fan or Space Heater
If you are asking yourself, what makes a good guest bedroom? It’s all about the temperature.
Well, maybe not ALL about it, but it is pretty dang important! You want your guests to feel comfortable when they sleep.
Providing them with a fan if they are hot or a space heater if they are cold is the best way to win host of the year! By far the best investment we made for our guest bedroom was this Dreo Tower Fan. It can provide some serious wind and has 6 different speeds to cool off to the temperature your guests prefer.
14. Covered Trash Can
It’s easy to forget little things like a trash can when you are first focusing on adding all of the adorable things to your list of guest room amenities.
So, let me be the one to remind you! It’s a good idea to have a trash can, preferably one that has a covered lid for privacy purposes.
This way your guests won’t have to travel down the hall to throw anything away or question where to put their trash. This will come in handy for the snacks you provided! 😉
15. Tissues
While we are on the topic of the least glamorous guest room necessities (lol), add tissues to the list!
Instead of your guests scrambling to the bathroom just to use TP, providing a box of tissues in their space is a great idea!
It’s the little things that may not seem like a big deal that can be so appreciated when it comes time to need them.
16. Oil Diffuser
If you want your guest room to smell HEAVENLY, you have to get an oil diffuser. This one is super adorable & can be paired with these essential oils which have over 1,000 reviews on Amazon.
You can obviously use room spray prior to your guest’s arrival, but what about making the room smell good for the entirety of their stay? An oil diffuser is a good option to give them so they can keep their room feeling spa-like!
I also like this idea over something like a wall plug-in because this will give them the option to have some good-smelling scents and control the intensity as opposed to potentially being overwhelmed with a constant strong scent!
17. A Personal Note
How sweet is this idea? When someone you love comes to stay with you, leaving a personalized note on their bed is a wonderful idea.
It will instantly make them feel welcomed and loved. It is always a good time to let someone know how much they mean to you! It’ll also start off their stay the right way; happy and in a good mood.
18. Gift Basket
This recommendation is really not necessary for your overnight guests, however, it is extremely thoughtful if these guests don’t come around too often.
Just imagine your guests showing up for their stay, walking into the guest bedroom, and seeing a beautiful welcome basket with all of their favorite things. They would absolutely love it!
This would be a great place to add a souvenir or some flavor of your hometown. This could be a tumbler with the city name on it, or even food from a local restaurant.

19. Ring Holder
For the guests out there who are married or always wear a lot of jewelry, having a ring holder in the room is a great idea!
They will be able to leave their rings on the nightstand safely at night.
20. Clean Towels
If you truly want your guest bedroom to feel like a little getaway for your guests, placing fresh, folded towels in their room is a good addition. It will feel like they just walked into a spa-like hotel.
You should definitely fold them in a cute way too while you are at it!
When purchasing the perfect towels for your guest bedroom/bathroom, I would highly recommend going for all-white towels. They bring a sense of freshness and are really easy to clean. And if you are looking for the softest towels I have ever felt in my life, you have to go with the Sonoma Bath Towels from Serena & Lily. They are seriously THAT good.

21. Robes & Slippers
While you are in the process of making your guest room feel like a hotel you have to ask yourself: What makes hotel guests happy? The answer…robes!
This is one of those items that will make them feel so unbelievably special. Having a robe and maybe some slippers ready to go in their room or guest bathroom is such a good idea!
22. Phillips Hue Bulbs With Switch
If you want to give your guests the power to control their lights from their bed without having to get up, you should definitely check out the Philips Hue Bulbs with a Switch.
When you don’t have guests staying with you, you can control these lights with an app on your phone. But while your guests are here, you can give them the power with the remote. They’ll be able to turn them on and off and dim them as well.
What’s required to make them work is the Bridge, which connects to your internet modem via an Ethernet cord. This is that square-looking thing that comes in the starter kit in the first link. The in-app setup is super easy to follow along with!
Both lamps in my guest bedroom have these bulbs and I’ve mounted the remote right above the actual light switch. My guests LOVE these and usually end up buying a pair when they get back to their house lol.
23. Laundry Hamper
When wondering what to put in a guest room, adding a laundry hamper to the list is a must! Even if they aren’t staying long enough to do a load of laundry, it’s still a nice place to put dirty towels!
Plus, you can find some super cute ones!
24. Extra Chargers
Other things to put in a guest room are chargers. They always seem to be the item travelers tend to forget the most.
This is why extra chargers are the perfect item to add to your list of guest room essentials!
Placing a couple of different chargers on their nightstand is a great idea! I always like to have an extra Apple watch charger and phone charger on hand!
This pairs great with the next idea!
25. Mini Powerstrip For Nightstand
Instead of having your visitors go on a hunt for the nearest outlet, put it right there on their nightstand! To secure it, attach a small Command strip to the back and stick it to the nightstand.
There are many extension lengths so no matter where your outlet is, you’ll be able to hide the cord and still reach it to the nightstand. I’ve found the Tessan brand to be very reliable – I have their products scattered throughout my house.
If your outlet is being blocked by furniture and this plug comes too far off the wall, they’ve thought of that too! Check out the thin plug on this version…it’s so thin you’ll be able to use it no matter how tight of a space you’re dealing with!
26. Nice Nightstands
Speaking of nightstand essentials, you have to stock it up! Here is a pretty good list of items that might be good to add to your nightstand drawer for your guests.
27. Notebook and pen – to write down their itinerary for the trip
28. Drink coasters – for their cup of water at night
29. Gum or mints – to start their day off fresh
30. Extra chargers – as we mentioned before 🙂
31. Sunscreen – for their adventures in the new city
If you need a suggestion for nice nightstands to add to your guest room essentials list, check out this set of 2 from Amazon! I have these exact nightstands in my guest room & they are actually super high quality for the price! It’s hard to beat this.

32. Extra Hangers
Whether someone is staying for a weekend or a full week, having the ability to hang up their clothes is always SO nice. Your guests may have packed nice outfits that they don’t want to get wrinkly by keeping them in their suitcases. It’s just a little extra amenity that they will appreciate!
Don’t have a place to hang hangers? You could also invest in a clothing rack. Especially if you are a person who always has someone staying with you!
33. Steamer
And while we are on the topic of the perfect unpacking plan for your guests, you should always have an extra steamer in the room. This will keep your guest’s clothes nice and wrinkle-free!
34. Hanging Shoe Rack
To finish off the ideal clothing storage for your guests, add a hanging shoe rack to the mix! It’s so much nicer than having their shoes sprawled out across the bedroom. It keeps them super organized!
This will come in handy for your guests.
35. Plants
Plants are the extra touch that can make your guest room feel extremely cozy! House plants that are super easy to take care of are definitely the way to go.
If you want to keep your plants in your guest room all year round, then having ones that are easy to take care of is a must. This is because you may not always remember to water them if you don’t use that room too much. Out of sight, out of mind is a real thing.
Here are some examples of easy to take care of plants haha!
- Snake Plant
- Golden Pothos
- Aloe
- Spider Plant
36. Curtains
Assuming your guest bedroom has a window, you should think about adding curtains! Curtains add a hominess that you want your guests to feel when they are staying in a new unfamiliar place!
Your guests might prefer to sleep in a super dark environment, so opting for blackout curtains might be the best move. Finding blackout curtains that are actually cute is a little tough so we recommend a blackout liner instead. You are still able to get the blackout effect but can purchase a curtain you actually like.
These are super cheap, come in plenty of different sizes, and work really well!
Tip: Before your guests arrive, open the windows or shades to make your guest bedroom feel really welcoming.

37. TV Essentials
38. Cheap TV
39. Google Chromecast or Fire Stick
40. TV Mount
All amazing guest rooms have a TV waiting for their guests when it’s time to unwind for the day. This is also a great opportunity for your guests to be able to hang out alone for a little bit and get away so you don’t have to feel like you need to entertain 24/7.
You can buy TVs for CHEAP on Amazon…and since it’s a guest bedroom, you don’t need anything fancy. I mean you can find smart TVs that are name-brand for under $400!
My husband and I have a cheap Smart Samsung TV in our family room and it’s more than enough, which means it’d be WAY more than enough in a guest room.
If you do get a new Smart TV, don’t worry about the Google Chromecast or Fire Stick. Those are only for older TVs you may be using so you’re able to get the popular streaming services on the old TV, such as Netflix.
And of course for space saving and a more modern look, don’t forget a cheap TV mount to hang your TV on the wall. I’m using this TV wall mount in my guest bedroom!
How do I prepare my room for guests?
- The first thing you should always do when preparing your guest bedroom for guests is wash your sheets and make the bed! The smell of freshly washed sheets is important. For this, I recommend using these Downy Lavender Scent Booster Beads.
- If you have carpet or a rug in your guest bedroom, you should also vacuum and do any last-minute cleaning before they come!
- I know I mentioned this earlier, but you could also open the curtains or blinds before they arrive so the room feels welcoming.
- One of the easiest ways to prepare for guests is to make your guest bedroom smell amazing – spray a room spray or light a candle.
- Last, but not least, add fresh flowers in a vase as the finishing touch!
All of these last-minute preparations will make your guest bedroom feel complete and ready to go for your guests.
41. Guest Bathroom Essentials
When thinking about guest room essentials, you can’t forget about the guest room toiletries that your guests will need to utilize during their stay. Here is a short list of some of the items that would be nice to have on hand in case they forgot to pack them.
- An extra hairdryer
- Sunscreen
- Extra razors
- Extra toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss
- A new loofah
- All kinds of medicine – aspirin, ibuprofen, antihistamine, and heartburn meds
- A small first-aid kit with bandaids
- Makeup remover
- Extra Q-tips and cotton swabs
- Lotion
- Mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and shaving cream
- Mini deodorant

I think you have it about covered! My parents are missionaries and I traveled with them and stayed at lots of different homes when I was a kid. I wrote out a list of everything I wanted my guest room to have in my diary after several less-than-stellar experiences 😀 and you’ve hit all of them! The only thing I’d mention is that not everyone likes the same fragrances so I’d hesitate to actually spray their pillows…maybe just put the spray on their nightstand.
